Heena Waleed Appointed as Chief Spokesperson

On Tuesday, Heena Waleed, the Chief Executive Officer of NSPA, was appointed as the Chief spokesperson for the President's Office.

According to the office, Heena Waleed will continue to hold her position as CEO of NSPA alongside her new role as Chief Spokesperson, appointed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

It was clarified by the President's Office that the Chief Spokesperson position held by Heena Waleed is non-salaried.

This marks the first time a woman has been appointed as the Chief Spokesperson of the President's Office.

Prior to this appointment, Heena Waleed served as the Political Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and had an extensive career in broadcast journalism and television presenting. She also held the position of Head of News at the state-run Public Service Media.

With a background in mass communication, journalism, and advertisement, Heena Waleed previously served as the spokesperson for PPM and expanded her role to become the chief spokesperson for the ruling PNC during the recent parliamentary election.

The appointment of a spokesperson comes after a prolonged vacancy, which had raised concerns among the public.

Following President Dr. Muizzu's inauguration on November 17th, Mohamed Shaheeb was appointed as the President's Office Spokesperson on December 13th, 2023. However, Shaheeb was later removed from the position on January 1st and reassigned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The government did not provide any official explanation for the decision to transfer Shaheeb.
