Abdulla Didi Appointed State Minister Despite Pending Charges

Former Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Didi has assumed the role of a state minister at the President's Office, despite facing potential charges linked to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.

Abdulla has been appointed as the State Minister for Legal Affairs at the President's Office.

The Prosecutor General's (PG) office is currently examining charges against Abdulla Didi in connection with the MMPRC case.

Abdulla Didi's removal from the bench by Parliament on August 28, 2019, followed an inquiry by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), which recommended his dismissal. His ousting garnered the support of 72 MPs.

The JSC inquiry into Abdulla Didi's alleged ethical misconduct was conducted publicly at the Dharubaaruge convention centre. He was accused of accepting bribes to unfairly convict opposition politicians since 2014. Additionally, he faced allegations of receiving cash from suspects involved in the MMPRC embezzlement scheme under suspicious circumstances.

A special committee tasked with investigating the case, along with a police report containing evidence, supported these allegations. Abdulla Didi responded to the committee's inquiry but did not disclose specific details.

Following the ethics investigation, the JSC committee unanimously voted to remove Abdulla Didi from the bench, concluding that he had accepted bribes and misused his authority for personal gain.
