PNC Secures Super Majority in Maldives Parliamentary Elections

In Sunday's Parliamentary Elections, the ruling People's National Congress secured a significant victory, clinching a super majority in parliament with 71 seats.

A super majority, constituting at least 70 seats, marks a substantial win for the PNC, consolidating its position in the parliament. Meanwhile, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) suffered a staggering defeat, securing only 12 seats despite fielding 89 candidates.

In a notable shift from previous elections, key population hubs such as the capital Male' City, Addu City, Fuvahmulah, and Kulhudhuhfushi were all won by the PNC, signaling a change in political dynamics.

This year's election witnessed a surge in independent candidates, totaling 130 across the country. However, only 6 independents managed to secure seats in the parliament.

The government-aligned Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) saw success with its leader Ahmed Siyam retaining his seat, along with another candidate from the party.

Similarly, the Maldives National Party (MNP) saw its leader Mohamed Nazim, endorsed by the government, securing victory in one constituency.

The Jumhoori Party also celebrated a win, with its leader Gasim Ibrahim re-elected for the Maamigili constituency.

In contrast, the Democrats, formed through a split from the MDP, failed to secure any seats, resulting in the loss of many long-serving parliamentarians.

Likewise, the Adhaalath Party faced disappointment as it failed to secure representation in the parliament.
